The striplings and gentlemen referred to in the title of deprive Morrell's book are the menfolk of the colonist families who later came to be known as the antique Natal Families (ONFs) (pp. 35-44) In 1880 the starting point for this contemplation most settler families in the Natal Midlands had been onward their farms for no more than twenty years, and there was little faculty of perception of social cohesion or community between them.
