The Manufacturers Association of Information Technology, an Indian hardware industry monitor, said consumer demand would lead to about 30 percent more computer and notebooks being sold in the year to March 2004 compared with the previous financial year.

"The turnaround in PC sales can be attributed to the vast demand from the telecommunication, banking, IT-enabled services and e-governance sectors," it said.

The Indian market saw sales of 23 million personal computer in fiscal year 2002-2003

Indian brands, which are aggressively trying to carve costs, are expected to retain 20 percent of the market.
